VPI’s Specialized CNT/Graphene Additive System Honored
On the afternoon of August 8 in Ho Chi Minh City, the Party Committee of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam), together with the Party Committee of Science Research and Training – Vietnam Petroleum Institute (VPI), held a ceremony to recognize and commemorate an outstanding project and product in celebration of the 4th Congress of the Petrovietnam Party Committee, 2025–2030 term.
The honored product is the specialized CNT/Graphene additive system that enhances performance and reduces consumption for lubricants and paints. This is the result of successfully researching and producing nano-carbon technology for the first time in Vietnam, and applying it in practice within the Group’s production and business activities.
The specialized CNT/Graphene additive system, developed through a closed-loop process from laboratory research to commercialization, delivers significant economic, technical, and social benefits, as emphasized by Mr. Phan Minh Quoc Binh, VPI Deputy Director and Rector of the Vietnam Petroleum Institute University.
In the lubricant sector, the additive reduces friction, saves fuel, limits emissions, and improves the operational efficiency of equipment and vehicles. It has been successfully commercialized at PVOIL Lube, marking a major milestone in the domestic Graphene/CNTs nano-technology sector.
In the industrial paint sector, the nano additive improves corrosion resistance, enhances adhesion, and extends coating lifespan—particularly for marine structures and outdoor steel works. The nano Graphene paint product was developed in collaboration between VPI and the PetroVietnam Maintenance and Repair Corporation (PVMR).
Beyond its technical value, the project also contributes to the strategy of developing low-carbon materials, supporting Vietnam’s green industrialization goals and Net Zero commitment. It stands as tangible proof of the innovation capacity and mastery of core technologies by scientists within the Petrovietnam ecosystem, while embodying the spirit of Resolution 57-NQ/TW on the development of a national innovation ecosystem.
At the ceremony, Petrovietnam leaders presented the decision to honor the outstanding product and commended the teams with exceptional achievements in its implementation.
In his directive remarks, Mr. Tran Quang Dung, Permanent Deputy Secretary of the Petrovietnam Party Committee, recognized the efforts and creative spirit of VPI, PVMR, and other collaborating units. He also set the direction to continue expanding production scale and prioritizing the use of nano graphene additives in Petrovietnam’s lubricant and coating products. This is one of 12 projects honored at the 4th Congress of the Group’s Party Committee.
Through observation and close involvement, Mr. Tran Quang Dung highlighted four key meanings of the product:
  1. It represents a rigorous, effective scientific process that yields timely, high-value, and applicable products.
  1. It achieves a “dual transformation” by turning traditional petroleum resources into high value-added products, while also reducing fuel consumption and limiting greenhouse gas emissions—contributing to the Net Zero 2050 goals of both the nation and the Group.
  1. It demonstrates increasingly close and sustainable connections within the Petrovietnam ecosystem.
  1. It enhances the competitiveness of products, thereby improving Petrovietnam’s market position.
Mr. Tran Quang Dung congratulated the five authors of the research team who, through serious and dedicated work, developed a product that reflects the intellect of Petrovietnam. He expressed his hope that such results will continue to spread throughout the Party Committee of Science Research and Training, as well as among researchers across the Group, leading to more projects, products, and services that enhance competitiveness and productivity. This, he emphasized, would contribute to Petrovietnam’s goal of maintaining its position as Vietnam’s No. 1 enterprise, remaining among the leading companies in the region, and striving to be ranked among the world’s top 500 largest enterprises by 2030.
Mr. Phan Anh Minh, Secretary of the Party Committee of Science Research and Training and Chairman of the Council of the Vietnam Petroleum Institute University, affirmed that the specialized CNT/Graphene additive system is a typical example of a product that moved from laboratory research to real-world application, with strong potential to deliver high benefits. He emphasized that in the future, VPI will continue to enhance scientific research activities to produce more new, highly applicable products that meet market needs.
The ceremony concluded with the recognition of the outstanding product in celebration of the 4th Congress of the Group’s Party Committee, 2025–2030 term—symbolizing the pride and determination of VPI scientists and the broader Petrovietnam team in their journey of innovation, contributing to the sustainable development of Vietnam’s industry and energy sector.
