VPI Launches eBook “Digital Product Innovation – AI for Everyone: Applications of Power BI Service and AutoML in the Oil and Gas Sector”

The Vietnam Petroleum Institute (VPI) launched the e-book titled “Digital product innovation - Everyone uses AI - Application of Power BI Service and AutoML in the oil and gas industry” (ISBN: 978-604-80-8046-4). The book is published by the Information and Communication Publishing House and distributed on Ebook365 - the national platform for publishing electronic books. The eBook aims to guide users in maximizing the potential of Power BI Service—a powerful data analytics platform within the Microsoft ecosystem—for digital product innovation, including the application of automated machine learning (AutoML). It also showcases exemplary digital products developed by VPI for the oil and gas industry. Embracing the philosophy that "anyone can build digital products," the book provides step-by-step, user-friendly instructions to help readers organize and harness data to create AI- and machine learning-driven digital tools that deliver real value for businesses. Readers are equipped with foundational to advanced knowledge, enabling them to develop their first digital products—from connecting diverse data sources, organizing and managing datasets for reporting, to building interactive visualizations tailored for end users. Notably, the digital products introduced in the book are approached in a logical, practical, and inspiring manner, empowering readers to embark on their own journey of digital product creation. Mr. Lê Ngọc Anh, Chief Data Officer at VPI and representative of the authoring team, stated: “This is the first title in VPI’s ‘AI for Everyone’ series, designed to help readers better understand tools for organizing and analyzing data such as Power BI Service, while also providing accessible insights into artificial intelligence (AI) through the application of AutoML. These technologies are reshaping how we work, learn, and generate value—not only in research but across the entire oil and gas business ecosystem. With AI, employees across all segments of the petroleum industry—from upstream to downstream, and across technical, economic, and managerial functions—can optimize their work, create new solutions, and contribute to the shared mission of securing national energy resources.” He also noted that VPI will continue to introduce more advanced tools and knowledge in upcoming publications, including Python programming and the application of physical and geological models developed by VPI experts. Mr. Lê Ngọc Anh – Chief Data Officer of VPI and representative of the authoring team – at the book launch ceremony As part of its strategic direction, VPI is focused on building, operating, and enhancing an innovation platform for the petroleum sector, enabling Petrovietnam to fully leverage internal resources and competitive advantages in support of energy transition and digital transformation. The goal is to ensure sustainable, efficient, and stable development while seizing new opportunities amid rapid shifts in the global energy landscape. Within this context, VPI has been developing both Digital/Physical Innovation Platform Teams and Digital/Physical Product Innovation Teams, focusing on key technological areas such as advanced exploration technologies, resource and reserve assessment, production optimization, energy efficiency, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), and green hydrogen/ammonia. Notably, VPI is also building the “Vietnam Petroleum Insights” (VPInsights) system—a national knowledge management and sharing platform for the oil and gas sector. VPInsights aims to provide users with fast, accurate, and comprehensive access to petroleum insights through a user-friendly interface powered by natural language processing. The system leverages cutting-edge AI technologies such as large language models (LLMs) and generative AI to synthesize over 60 years of expertise and experience from Vietnamese petroleum professionals, along with vast datasets and global petroleum knowledge. VPInsights will serve as a collaborative knowledge ecosystem, enabling VPI, Petrovietnam, and both domestic and international partners to access, utilize, and contribute to a shared digital knowledge base—supporting more timely, effective forecasting and strategic decision-making in an increasingly volatile global energy market. Research on Non-Structural Trap Exploration Methods at Block 09-1, Cuu Long Basin

On April 27, the Vietnam Petroleum Institute (VPI) held an institutional-level doctoral thesis defense for PhD candidate Nguyễn Lâm Anh with the dissertation titled “Research on Non-Structural Trap Exploration Methods Based on the Analysis of Geological and Geophysical Data; Practical Application in Block 09-1, Cuu Long Basin.” The research is in the field of Petroleum Engineering, specialization code 9.52.06.04. During the thesis defense, PhD candidate Nguyễn Lâm Anh presented new research findings based on the analysis of recent 3D–4C seismic and well data. The research clarified the differences between fluvial–lacustrine and marine sedimentary characteristics, including lithofacies, paleoenvironmental depositional conditions, morphology, dimensions, and spatial–temporal facies variations. PhD candidate Nguyễn Lâm Anh presenting his dissertation Based on these findings, Nguyễn Lâm Anh proposed a sequence stratigraphy framework comprising two system tracts—High-Accommodation System Tract (HAST) and Low-Accommodation System Tract (LAST)—for fluvial–lacustrine sedimentary formations. This framework serves as a scientifically sound and rational foundation for pilot studies on the exploration of non-structural traps in Block 09-1, Cuu Long Basin. The applied methodology initially enabled the prediction of several prospective non-structural traps with hydrocarbon potential in this area. The Evaluation Council congratulates PhD candidate Nguyễn Lâm Anh on her successful thesis defense Regarding the key findings and new contributions of the thesis, Professor Dr. Sci. Mai Thanh Tân, Chairman of the Evaluation Council, noted: “This dissertation has contributed to the development of theoretical foundations and methodological approaches for non-structural trap exploration in fluvial–lacustrine formations, based on a dual system tract sequence stratigraphy framework—HAST and LAST. The proposed methodology has proven capable of identifying and delineating several non-structural traps within Oligocene–Early Miocene sediments at Block 09-1, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of hydrocarbon exploration in the Cuu Long Basin.” VPI leadership congratulates PhD candidate Nguyễn Lâm Anh Regarding the scientific validity and reliability of the thesis's arguments and conclusions, the Council affirmed that the dissertation was conducted using a comprehensive set of data, including seismic, well log, lithological, paleontological, and sample analysis results. The research combined conventional geological and geophysical methods with a novel sequence stratigraphy approach and was supported by advanced commercial software integrating artificial intelligence, ensuring the reliability of the results. Pilot application in Block 09-1 confirmed the scientific and practical soundness of the proposed methodology. PhD candidate Nguyễn Lâm Anh presents flowers to his academic advisors,Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoàng Văn Quý and Dr. Nguyễn Thanh Tùng Exploration Division leadership from Petrovietnam congratulates PhD candidate Nguyễn Lâm Anh Production Division leadership from Petrovietnam congratulates PhD candidate Nguyễn Lâm Anh The Evaluation Council unanimously approved the thesis and recommended the conferral of the doctoral degree in Petroleum Engineering to PhD candidate Nguyễn Lâm Anh, in accordance with the doctoral training regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training and the Vietnam Petroleum Institute.
