Mitigating Air Pollution from Diesel Engine Exhausts
27/10/2025
On October 27, 2025, Petrovietnam Fertilizer and Chemicals Corporation (PVFCCo) and the Vietnam Petroleum Institute (VPI), with the approval of the Hanoi People’s Committee, successfully organized the scientific conference “Reducing emissions from diesel engine vehicles: Current situation and solutions for major cities in Vietnam”. The conference provided a comprehensive overview of traffic-related air pollution, shared international best practices, and introduced advanced technological solutions, including the DEF – Phu My Xanh diesel exhaust fluid emission reduction roadmap.
The delegates chaired the scientific workshop titled “Reducing emissions from diesel engine vehicles: Current situation and solutions for major cities in Vietnam”
In the opening speech, Deputy General Director of Petrovietnam Le Xuan Huyen emphasized that fine dust and harmful pollutants (including NOx) in major cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have reached alarming levels, with road traffic being one of the main contributors. Recognizing the urgency of this issue, Petrovietnam has directed its subsidiaries to actively conduct research, notably PVFCCo’s DEF – Phu My Xanh product, which meets ISO 22241 international standards and contributes to promoting green transformation in the transport sector.

The conference focused on critical issues Current emissions status and solutions for diesel engines – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Huu Tuyen, Director of the Center for Research on Power Sources and Autonomous Vehicles, Hanoi University of Science and Technology; Global experience in emission control – Dr. Nguyen Huu Luong, VPI expert; Policies and roadmap for emission control in Vietnam and Hanoi – Mr. Hoang Hai, Department of Environmental Quality Management, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.
At the conference, Mr. Tran Vinh Loc, Deputy Director of PVFCCo’s Research and Application Center, introduced the Phu My Xanh solution, emphasizing that Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is currently the most effective technology for reducing NOx emissions from diesel engines. SCR uses DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid), a mixture of 32.5% urea and 67.5% demineralized water. When injected into the catalyst, DEF converts up to 90% of NOx into nitrogen and water vapor. PVFCCo’s DEF – Phu My Xanh is produced from high-purity urea at the Phu My Fertilizer Plant, ensuring exceptional purity and ultra-low heavy metal content, fully compliant with ISO 22241 standards. Independent testing confirms impurity levels far below permissible limits, protecting SCR systems and maintaining optimal performance.
Mr. Đỗ Thanh Bái, Chairman of the Voluntary Social Responsibility Council of Vietnamese Chemical Enterprises, highly appreciated PVFCCo – Phú Mỹ’s product DEF – Phú Mỹ Xanh.
Mr. Do Thanh Bai, Chairman of the Voluntary Responsible Care Council for Vietnamese Chemical Enterprises (VRCC), praised the development of internationally certified DEF as a clear demonstration of the chemical industry’s commitment to “business aligned with environmental protection.” He noted that the product not only meets stringent technical requirements but also reflects strong corporate social responsibility by actively contributing to emission reduction and environmental protection.
Experts and scientists at the workshop recommended that authorities issue national technical standards for DEF, strengthen inspections and penalties for non-compliant products, and introduce green credit policies and tax incentives for businesses investing in eco-friendly solutions.
