VPI and INST Explore Potential Collaboration on Nuclear Battery Research
On September 23, 2025, the Vietnam Petroleum Institute (VPI) held a working session with the Institute for Nuclear Science and Technology (INST) to discuss research cooperation in next-generation nuclear energy, with a focus on developing nuclear batteries.
At the meeting, leaders of INST introduced the institute’s functions, expertise, and experience in nuclear science and atomic energy.
Dr. Nguyễn Văn Tư – Acting Vice President of VPI, visited the laboratory of INST.
Dr. Nguyễn Văn Tư, Acting Vice President of VPI, visited INST’s laboratory and presented VPI’s functions, capabilities, and experience in the energy industry, particularly in isotope applications for oil and gas exploration. He also outlined the orientation of Petrovietnam/VPI in researching and piloting strategic technologies, including the development, production, and application of nuclear batteries, Thorium from Monazite ore, and other products.
Representatives of VPI and INST shared initial research findings on nuclear batteries—a power source with high energy density, a lifespan lasting decades, and stable performance under harsh conditions. Both sides exchanged experiences in conducting research on nuclear batteries and Thorium from Monazite ore, and agreed to establish a joint research group to develop a roadmap for the research, development, and production of nuclear batteries.
Leaders of VPI, INST, and participating experts attended the meeting.
The combination of VPI’s technological capabilities and INST’s nuclear expertise is expected to deliver practical outcomes, making an important contribution to Vietnam’s energy transition and sustainable development.
