On August 27, 2026, the Vietnam Petroleum Institute (VPI, a member unit of PETROVIETNAM), hosted a workshop on updating information on conventional and unconventional resources and outlining directions for exploration activities in Vietnam.
The workshop focused on three key topics: updating the assessment of remaining petroleum resources in the Song Hong, Cuu Long and Nam Con Son basins; evaluating the prospects for natural hydrogen exploration in Vietnam; and discussing new approaches to petroleum system assessment and the identification of exploration opportunities. The event provided a platform for experts and scientists to exchange knowledge, share the latest information and research findings, and support VPI in further refining its science and technology research programs to meet the development needs of the energy industry.

Leaders of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Association and the Vietnam Petroleum Institute chaired the workshop.
At the workshop, VPI presented updated assessments of the remaining petroleum resources in Vietnam’s three major sedimentary basins (Song Hong, Cuu Long and Nam Con Son), based on integrated geological and geophysical data, exploration results, and the latest petroleum system evaluation models. The presentation indicated that the Cuu Long basin still holds considerable potential, particularly in stratigraphic and non-structural traps. Meanwhile, the Nam Con Son and Song Hong basins continue to offer significant opportunities for new discoveries. Based on these findings, VPI proposed conducting more detailed evaluations of new exploration targets while enhancing the application of advanced seismic techniques, modern geological models and existing geological and geophysical datasets to improve resource discovery, contribute to reserve additions and sustain future production.
Drawing on global research achievements, discoveries and exploration activities related to natural hydrogen, VPI also assessed the geological prerequisites and exploration potential for natural hydrogen in Vietnam. Based on international experience, VPI proposed developing a dedicated natural hydrogen database, incorporating hydrogen analysis into exploration drilling programs, prioritizing surveys in prospective areas and gradually establishing an appropriate legal framework to support the investigation and evaluation of this emerging resource.
Speaking at the workshop, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Thap, Chairman of the Vietnam Petroleum Association (VPA), emphasized the need to develop a comprehensive research program covering the entire natural hydrogen value chain, from exploration, discovery and resource assessment to production, processing and utilization. He also highlighted the importance of expanding analytical parameters and monitoring systems to better understand the scale, distribution, accumulation potential and commercial value of natural hydrogen resources. Regarding petroleum exploration, VPA’s Chairman recommended that VPI focus on analyzing the factors behind the success or failure of exploration wells, particularly those targeting stratigraphic, non-structural and combination traps, in order to derive lessons learned for future exploration strategies.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Nguyen Van Tu, General Director of VPI, highly appreciated the valuable contributions and recommendations made by experts regarding future exploration directions in Vietnam. He emphasized that VPI will continue to strengthen research in petroleum exploration and the development of new energy resources, with the objective of generating practical and impactful outcomes capable of addressing the pressing challenges facing the energy industry. In line with this commitment, VPI has been proactively mobilizing and contributing its resources, data, and technical expertise to the development and implementation of research programs and projects. General Director of VPI also expressed his desire for continued collaboration and support from experts and the VPA in advancing these initiatives in the years ahead.
