VPI working with KN Energies on optimized LNG infrastructure development solutions
02/04/2026
On 2 April 2026, Dr. Nguyen Van Tu, Deputy General Director in charge of the Vietnam Petroleum Institute (VPI), worked with Dr. Linas Kilda, Chief Business Development Officer of KN Energies, to discuss the potential and opportunities for research and cooperation on LNG infrastructure development in Vietnam.
During the meeting, the two sides introduced their respective capabilities and experience, and exchanged views on cooperation opportunities in research, consultancy, surveys, and assessment of LNG terminal development models in Vietnam. On this basis, VPI and KN Energies focused their discussions on flexible LNG terminal development solutions, tailored to market scale, energy demand, and investment capacity; while also reviewing technical requirements and infrastructure standards, and formulating implementation roadmaps aligned with Vietnam’s specific conditions and international development trends.
KN Energies’ experience shows that a phased approach to LNG terminal development—starting with floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) or other floating solutions, and gradually transitioning to onshore LNG receiving terminals once the market reaches sufficient scale—can optimize both investment timeline and capital costs. The two sides held detailed discussions on the role of technical, economic, and integrated master planning consultancy in supporting government authorities and investors in selecting LNG terminal development options suited to the specific characteristics of each region.
Speaking at the meeting, Dr. Nguyen Van Tu, Deputy General Director in charge of VPI, highly appreciated KN Energies’ capabilities and experience in LNG terminal development, affirming that this provides a strong basis for advancing research and consultancy cooperation in support of the energy transition process. VPI leadership also shared the potential for expanding cooperation into new domains, particularly the integration of LNG, hydrogen, and CCS/CCUS within low‑emission energy system models, contributing to the goal of a sustainable energy transition.
For his part, Dr. Linas Kilda, Chief Business Development Officer of KN Energies, noted that KN Energies has extensive experience in the development and operation of LNG infrastructure, especially import LNG terminals based on FSRU technology and roadmap‑based LNG infrastructure models. He reiterated KN Energies’ readiness to cooperate with VPI in sharing practical experience and market data, with a view to optimizing the formulation of LNG infrastructure development roadmaps that are well aligned with Vietnam’s conditions and demand.
At the conclusion of the meeting, leaders of both sides agreed to continue technical exchanges and advisory cooperation, serving as a foundation for concrete research and consultancy activities between VPI and KN Energies in the coming period.
