VPI Works with Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Key Digital Transformation Directions
05/12/2025
Within the framework of AWS re:Invent 2025, held from December 1–5, 2025 in Las Vegas (USA), the delegation of the Vietnam Petroleum Institute (VPI), led by Mr. Nguyen Van Tu – Deputy General Director in charge of VPI, met with senior leaders and experts of Amazon Web Services (AWS).
AWS re:Invent is one of the world’s largest technology events focused on cloud computing and is organized annually by AWS. This year’s conference attracted more than 60,000 global experts, developers, and business leaders, spotlighting breakthrough trends such as Agentic AI, high-performance computing (HPC), AI factories, and quantum computing. The event provided VPI with an opportunity to explore core technologies that support the digital transformation strategies of both Petrovietnam and VPI.
At the Energy & Utilities Industry Pavilion, VPI had 2 bilateral meetings with AWS. Discussions focused on: HPC for geological–reservoir–cracking simulations, leveraging next-generation Trainium/GPU to shorten computation time and reduce simulation costs; Digital Twins for processing units, gas turbines, and compressors, integrating real-time data to support forecasting and operational optimization; Building a specialized petroleum Data Center and Data Lakehouse, aiming at data synchronization, standardization, and enabling AI-driven analytics following the OSDU model; AI-based predictive maintenance and Agentic AI solutions to enhance equipment reliability, reduce downtime, and optimize maintenance costs; Research and potential adoption of quantum computing for complex optimization challenges in logistics, pipeline design, and energy simulations.
In addition to AWS, the VPI delegation also engaged with several international technology partners participating in the conference, including organizations specializing in HPC, industrial simulation, foundational AI, and operational optimization solutions in the energy sector. Discussions centered on experiences in deploying large-scale HPC clusters, building multiphysics simulation environments, developing industrial AI, and applying multimodal AI models for petrochemical and refinery operations.
Following the working sessions, VPI and AWS agreed to continue close collaboration to operationalize the discussed initiatives, particularly in piloting digital twins, developing specialized HPC simulation clusters, deploying enterprise-grade AI platforms based on Bedrock and AgentCore, and expanding cooperation in training and technology transfer for VPI engineers and experts.

VPI’s participation in AWS re:Invent 2025 demonstrates its proactive approach in adopting foundational technologies for digital transformation, supporting Petrovietnam in modernizing data infrastructure, enhancing computational capabilities, optimizing operations, and strengthening safety, efficiency, and sustainability across the entire energy value chain.
