VPI works with ROSATOM on Research Cooperation in Nuclear Energy, Energy Storage and Energy Transition
09/04/2026
On April 9, 2026, the Vietnam Petroleum Institute (VPI), under the Vietnam National Industry – Energy Group (Petrovietnam), held a working session with the State Atomic Energy Corporation of the Russian Federation (Rosatom) to discuss orientations for cooperation in scientific research and human resource training in the field of nuclear energy and advanced energy technologies.
The leaders of the two sides focused their discussions on potential areas of cooperation, including research and assessment of the role of nuclear energy in the national power generation mix, particularly its contribution to greenhouse gas emission reduction goals and to ensuring the stability of the power system; cooperation in training and development of high-quality human resources, encompassing expert exchanges, postgraduate training programs, and in-depth capacity building for engineers and technical staff; and sharing international experience and standards in the fields of nuclear safety, radiation safety, and environmental protection. The two sides also assessed the potential for linking nuclear energy research with emerging energy sectors and high-technology fields in the context of the global energy transition.
Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Dmitry Raspopin, Director of Rosatom’s Representative Office in Vietnam, stated that Rosatom is ready to share its experience and provide technological solutions in the field of nuclear energy. He also expressed Rosatom’s interest in expanding cooperation with Vietnamese research organizations, including VPI, to support Vietnam’s access to modern, safe, and sustainable energy solutions. Mr. Dmitry Raspopin emphasized that cooperation in research and human resource development constitutes a solid foundation for the long-term development of Vietnam’s energy sector.
Dr. Nguyen Van Tu, Deputy General Director in charge of VPI, highly appreciated Rosatom’s capabilities and experience in the field of nuclear energy, and proposed that the two sides continue to maintain professional exchanges and move toward the implementation of concrete joint research activities. Such cooperation would contribute to enhancing the effectiveness of policy advisory work and the development of high-quality human resources in nuclear energy and advanced energy technologies.
Rosatom holds the world’s largest portfolio of orders for nuclear power plant construction, with 41 power units in 11 countries at various stages of implementation. It is also the largest producer of electricity in the Russian Federation, accounting for approximately 20% of the country's total electricity production. Rosatom is the world’s only company possessing the full suite of technologies for a closed nuclear fuel cycle, and it is expanding its activities into new areas such as nuclear medicine, additive technologies, energy storage systems, digitalization and software development, logistics, and the development of the Northern Sea Route.
